2024 Philadelphia Walk for Apraxia

Leila's League

Leila's League is back for our third year hoping to raise awareness and support for childhood apraxia of speech. Leila and the rest of the Apraxia Stars walk to acknowledge all the hard work they do to overcome communication challenges that affect their life.

For those of you that don't know, here's Leila's story:

Leila was about a year when we mentioned to her pediatrician she didn't have many words. We had a wonderful speech therapist who met with us after a session to say she was concerned this wasn't just a speech delay or Leila being a late talker, Leila has apraxia of speech.

Apraxia is a neurological motor planning disorder -- the brain knows what it wants to say, but can't coordinate the sequence required to make the speech sound movements. She understands everything but can't always make the same sounds for words she knows or often will say "I don't know" despite knowing the answer. Apraxia even makes it difficult to smile on demand, respond to direct questions and recall or articulate thoughts, feelings and emotions. The altered motor planning process also effects coordination, fine motor skills and age appropriate tasks.

There is no quick fix or cure, treatment includes intensive speech therapy 5 days a week and utilizing specialized resources. Leila overcomes daily frustrations of being misunderstood and corrected but that doesn't stop her. She compensates to express herself whenever needed, she's determined, outgoing and pretty stubborn but also has the biggest heart. We continue to advocate for Leila and ensure she gets the support she needs to continue to grow and feel included. She is committed to finding her voice and we will be there every step of the way!

If you are able, please help us meet our fundraising goal by making a donation or by joining our team. You, too, can make an impact for children and families affected by apraxia!
