Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a motor planning speech disorder that makes it difficult for an individual to produce the words that they want to say. It is as if there is a disconnect between the brain and the muscles in the mouth. My son, Nicholas, has put in many hours of hard work in speech therapy working on his communication skills, particularly his articulation and ability to be understood verbally by other people. He recently participated in a research study at Hofstra University for children with Apraxia of Speech where he was officially diagnosed and received therapy focused on the movements his mouth makes. Nicholas continues to put a lot of hard work and effort into "his words," and we will continue to support and celebrate him!
Why I walk for Apraxia Kids!
I walk to support all children diagnosed with apraxia of speech - our Apraxia Stars. To show these children they are not alone and to acknowledge all the hard work they must do to overcome communication challenges that affect their day-to-day lives.
I walk to raise funds for the mission of Apraxia Kids – to strengthen the support systems in the lives of children with apraxia of speech by educating professionals and families; facilitating community engagement and outreach; and investing in the future through advocacy and research.
Please help me meet my fundraising goal by making a donation now or by joining our team. You, too, can make an impact for children and families affected by apraxia!
I believe, “Every child deserves a voice”.
