Come join Nico’s Ninjas as we celebrate and support our Apraxia Warrior, Nico.

In May 2023, at age 3, Nico was officially diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. As a part of the evaluation process, we completed a word inventory list. At the time, our list contained 43 words or “utterances”. 

Nico may have known what he wanted to say, but Apraxia makes it difficult to carry out the complex sequenced movements that are necessary for speech to occur. Can you imagine the frustration that would accompany such a challenge—where the average 3 year old is able to communicate with 500-1000+ words and you have 43 to work with? Nico has worked hard, despite the barriers that stand in his way, to make his voice heard—loud and clear—problem solving along the way, using whatever creative methods needed to be understood.

Fast forward to today, nearly 18 months later, and I could not even begin to count how many words Nico would have on that word inventory list. He is a true warrior and continues to amaze us everyday. He shows unparalleled resilience and determination. Nico deserves to be recognized and celebrated for the star that he is.
