Welcome to my personal fundraising page for the Walk for Apraxia. I’m not one to solicit for anything, so if I’m asking this is something near and dear to me.
I Walk for Apraxia to show my support for our Charlie, who is getting diagnosed with this speech disorder, which is not very well known by the public. This is a motor planning disorder in which the signals from the brain are not connecting properly muscles that control speech production making it very hard to be understood even when a child is trying to communicate. Not only does this make it hard to express your wants and needs in general, but makes it difficult to create social connections (because your peers don’t understand you), and can also lead to other language and learning issues because of the lack of speech at a younger age. While it is not as prevalent as other developmental conditions, it is growing in numbers. So I also Walk to show these children they are not alone.
Every dollar raised helps support Apraxia Kids. I believe in the work Apraxia Kids does to strengthen the support systems in the lives of children with apraxia so that each child is afforded their best opportunity to develop to their full potential. Thankfully, Charlie is beginning to improve his speech slowly with intensive speech therapy through Early Intervention, but he still has a way to go to put more sounds together to be more fully understood by others. Having organizations like this helps provide resources for Speech Therapists to use to help kids like Charles so they have a better chance of improving their speech delays so it doesn’t become a bigger problem down the line in school.
I need your help. Would you please consider making a donation or joining our team Charles’ Chargers? To join our team, register on the link below. The event is the morning of September 21st (registration is at 9:00, walk at 10:00) at Clove Lakes Park in Staten Island. If you register before July 8th and use the code ‘earlybird’ (sometimes you have to put it in more than once) you get 25% off the registration cost.
You can also donate to the link below as well. Your donation goes to fund amazing programs like iPads for children who need it to communicate, parent and speech therapist workshops, research, and a program to assist families in need with speech therapy costs that Apraxia Kids organizes. Thank you again for your support in this very important cause!
