As many of you know my amazing daughter Hailey has Apraxia, she has to work much harder than the rest of us to find her voice and be heard.
So what is apraxia?
Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a motor planning disorder that makes it hard for children to speak. Children with the diagnosis of apraxia of speech generally have a good understanding of language and know what they want to say. However, they have difficulty learning or carrying out the complex movements that underlie speech. It is a LIFE LONG neurological disorder.
I walk to support all children diagnosed with apraxia of speech - our Apraxia Stars. To show these children, and to show my daughter, she is not alone and to acknowledge all the hard work that must be done to overcome the communication challenges that affect their EVERY day. We recently moved back to Ontario so Hailey can work with a specialist and she has made huge gains but it is likely Hailey will be in speech therapy well into her teens. She has to work hard to communicate, this walk is also in recognition of that for her, and every child like her.
I walk to raise funds for the mission of Apraxia Kids – to strengthen the support systems in the lives of children with apraxia of speech by educating professionals and families; facilitating community engagement and outreach; and investing in the future through advocacy and research. Apraxia kids is helps these children with resources, programs, online support and training for families. This walk is also important for awareness! If you're like me you had never heard before, so help me spread awareness for Hailey.
Please help me meet my fundraising goal by making a donation now or by joining our team. You too, can make an impact for children and families affected by apraxia! If you can't/ don't want to donate that's of course okay too but please share! Awareness is everything, it creates more understanding and empathy.
I believe, “Every child deserves a voice” and I will be Hailey's until she can do it on her own!
