***
“Need a Charades partner? Noah’s repertoire of gestures is unrivaled!”

"Is Noah saying at least ten words?" Ohh...umm...yes I think he has said ten words before. "Does he say Mama?" Well..no. "Dada?" No… "Bye bye?" No... "Baby?" No… "What does he say?" ...ball...

I remember reading this thing about children that have trouble learning to speak...Apraxia or something…

"Is Noah saying at least 20 words?" Umm..I don’t think so. Now that you mention it...he doesn’t even say ball anymore…"Does he make animal sounds?"...well..no…

Speech Evaluation: "Noah is a bright boy. He is probably just needs to build some confidence. He seems to be a bit of a perfectionist. A couple months of speech therapy should be the kick start he needs."
***
A few month’s into Speech Therapy: "I think we should start increasing the frequency of Noah’s sessions. Speaking seems to be very hard work for Noah."

“I have worked with children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech for over 30 years.” *relief...finally...* “ Noah has verbal apraxia...PROFOUND DELAY...LONG ROAD...NEUROLOGICAL ISSUE...MOTOR PLANNING...INTENSE THERAPY...YEARS...*heartbreak…*
*FAST FORWARD PRESENT DAY*
“HUN! HUN!” Noah, bellows from the back hall. “Pay…?” Let me finish helping your brother with his math. “Min...Dain...?” He pleads holding up one finger. Okay, I can play train for few minutes.

After almost a year of working with a fabulous speech therapist and a few months into finding a therapist who specialises in Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Noah has made enormous strides and is able to advocate for himself for the majority of his needs. Four days a week Noah has speech therapy and a session of OT (Occupational Therapy: Fine/ Gross Motor Skills) Every sound is a challenge. Every syllable, a battle. He is the hardest working person I know and he is 2 ½ years old. He is smart, patient, and kind. He is resilient in a way I never knew possible. He is just beginning his fight to find his voice. The fact he is receiving intensive therapy at such a young age, and that does not have any comorbidities (accompanying disabilities to his verbal apraxia) give him a promising prognosis. It will be no easy task and take years...but he WILL find his voice.
Noah was able to receive such early intervention because one person joined the walk for apraxia and shared a post, piquing my curiosity. One click from a curious mind! What are the chances? APRAXIA is considered rare 1-2/ 1000 children), but it is SO, SO, SO important to spread the awareness, not just to parents, but to teachers, family, friends, neighbors and even doctors and speech therapists!

Sometimes things don’t really resonate with people until they know someone….
