Imagine with us for a moment...
You walk into a coffee shop, you look at the menu and decide you want a coffee. 2 sugars and a splash of milk is how you take it. When you step up to the counter the barista asks what she can make you. You try to speak, but your mouth will not co-operate, you're frozen in silence. You try again and maybe it comes out almost perfect, or more likely it doesn't sound quite right. You might even have to repeat it a few more times. Eventually you get your order. Depending on how clear you were in the moment, you may or may not have received a coffee with 2 sugars and a splash of milk, or maybe you received an iced latte with a touch of sugar. That isn't what you ordered, but you also don’t have the energy or even the courage to start again.
This is what life is like for a person with apraxia of speech, except, its not just a coffee order, it's all aspects of speech that is affected. What comes so easy and naturally to us is one of life's biggest challenges for those with apraxia. They constantly have to work to get every word out with the correct sounds, speed and pitch.
We walk to support these children - our Apraxia Stars. To show children like Ethan they are not alone and to acknowledge all the hard work they must do to overcome communication challenges that affect their day-to-day lives.
We walk to raise funds for the mission of Apraxia Kids – to strengthen the support systems in the lives of children with apraxia of speech by; educating professionals and families, facilitating community engagement and outreach and investing in the future through advocacy and research.
Please help us meet our fundraising goal by making a donation now, or by joining our team. You can make an impact for children and families affected by apraxia!
We believe “Every child deserves a voice”.
