2021 Hershey Walk for Apraxia

The British Islas

Hello all!

A fellow speech/Apraxia mom shared this event with me two years ago, and we are hoping to participate ourselves this year! Isla's exact diagnosis is still really not clear, but the current impression is that she has dyspraxia of speech which is really a version of apraxia. The strategies in therapy are the same for kiddos with apraxia and the research done for one will certainly benefit the other. Whatever the label, we all know that she has put in countless hours in therapy over the last five years and works harder than every one of us combined to make her voice heard. We are so crazy proud of her and want her to have the chance to meet some kiddos who have similar experiences. I've also heard that every child gets recognized and receives a medal at the end of the walk, really celebrating all of the time and effort they have sacrificed to overcome the challenges they face. And you KNOW she will love that!!

This is the email the organization offers to explain their mission, so I've included it below...

I walk to support all children diagnosed with apraxia of speech - our Apraxia Stars. To show these children they are not alone and to acknowledge all the hard work they must do to overcome communication challenges that affect their day-to-day lives.

I walk to raise funds for the mission of Apraxia Kids – to strengthen the support systems in the lives of children with apraxia of speech by educating professionals and families; facilitating community engagement and outreach; and investing in the future through advocacy and research.

Please help me meet my fundraising goal by making a donation now or by joining our team. You, too, can make an impact for children and families affected by apraxia!

I believe, “Every child deserves a voice”.

And so... If you feel inclined to donate, go right ahead. If you'd like to walk with us, we would love to see you! If you just want to let Isla know how proud you are of her and how very much you are cheering her on, that's enough too. We are grateful for all the ways you love our girl (and our family)!

With love,

Chelsea, John, Jaxon, Harper, and Isla
